It all began with a whole lot of frustration...
|
That’s why just about everyone in this country recognizes this grumpy-looking man. From the Baltic Sea to Lake Constance, there isn’t one household where he hasn't yet caused lots of frustration. And endless fun...
With this lucky guy’s face on about 70 million bright red packages, a place of honor in the city of Bonn’s "Haus der Geschichte", and a newly gained cult status on the board game scene, the man in the black suit still just couldn’t cheer up. But why so glum?! This spoilsport hasn't managed to spoil the fun for our parents, our grandparents, nor for our great-grandparents in nearly 100 years. On the contrary!

"Mensch ärgere Dich nicht", invented in the early 1900s by the Amberg native Josef Friedrich Schmidt in a small garage in Giesig, a working class quarter of Munich, has earned its place among the greats. More or less the mother of all games, a true classic that "rose to become the most popular game in the country", as the magazine "Der Spiegel" once said.
This evergreen best seller - in which nothing is more enjoyable than frustrating yourself and others - is still the driving force keeping one of the most longstanding and popular brand names on the German game market going so strong today. And it has empowered us to go places where others wouldn't dare: Schmidt Spiele.
...and for that, there's still a whole lot of fun today!

Lots of fun for young and old, big and small!
And above all, our top quality is made in Germany. Over 90 percent of the complete range of products is made within the country.
That includes lively family games as well as enjoyable learning games for children, clever & strategic brain teasers, cheerful card games and tricky puzzles with memorable designs.
Only the cuddly stuffed animals come from beyond the black, red and yellow national borders. But even there Schmidt Spiele makes sure that everything is accomplished with fairness and inspections. So, true to the motto:
Trusting is good – but inspecting is always better!

This attitude has led Schmidt Spiele to the top, making us one of the leading German game companies helping to shape the future of the market. Since 1997, this has been going on under the roof of the Blatz Group in Berlin, where we spell "children’s entertainment" with a capital C. Germany’s most famous pachyderm, Benjamin Blümchen, and the smart girl witch Bibi Blocksberg are just two of the many characters envisioned there, along with the numerous audio and video cassette scripts that are written as well as produced inside these walls.
Child- & game-oriented expertise: They go hand in hand! Perfectly.

We’ve got nothing on our minds besides playing!
There is hardly another market which is "enlivened" by new ideas as much as the toy and game market. That’s why we have nothing but playing on our minds at Schmidt Spiele. Our 15-person product development team is a perfect example, because they are busy "tinkering" on a wealth of new concepts all year round. Not by themselves in quiet little chambers, but together in a team with both renowned and emerging freelance game inventors, with authors, editors and graphic designers, with educators, psychologists, and with players. Each product that we introduce in our displays at trade shows every year is the quality result of real teamwork.

600 different products are included in the Schmidt Spiele range. Many of them are already classics, like Mensch ärgere Dich nicht, of course! Kniffel is another one of the classics. And Ligretto; and so on... On average, we come up with more than 150 new products every year! Still have questions? With over 3,200 toy retailers, from the small office supply shop on the corner to well-stocked specialty stores in the city, large shopping malls and the virtual shelves on the internet, Schmidt Spiele surely has the answer. And just the right game for you.
Schmidt Spiele GmbH, run by the essential "head game leaders" Axel Kaldenhoven and Martina Priemer, is a full-range supplier that has developed into an unshakeable and reliable major player in the game industry. This position charges the partnership with much responsibility, and it is one that Schmidt Spiele has long held.

Continual growth in a tight market doesn’t come easy
Many things can be done: For example, implementing trade-related concepts. Or supporting well thought-out CRM programs that vitalize our close alliance with trade partners and ensure a steady flow of information that keeps the supply chain transparent. Or the development of a highly modern logistic center run by computers, which is one of a kind in the entire game branch. "Just in time" isn’t just a slogan; it enables us to offer 24-hour express deliveries. So much is possible when you act on something!
Schmidt games are more than just Schmidt games
Schmidt Spiele makes big games for little kids and little games for big kids – and vice versa. That’s what the Schmidt Spiele logo represents. Since our best ideas don’t cater to each and every game maniac, Schmidt Spiele has been in very successful cooperation with two brilliant game companies for many years. Ever since, they only have to focus more on what they do best: developing really good games.

Hans im Glück Verlag
With the Munich game publisher Hans im Glück, Schmidt Spiele added a few "premium ideas" – or "specialties", so to speak – to its range of products for extraordinary family and adult games. Games which have been highly praised by critics and have received numerous prizes up and down the country. Hans im Glück is already a sort of regular at the presentation of the renowned jury prize for "Game of the Year". With the strategic tile game Carcassonne, which was distinguished in 2001, Schmidt Spiele now has a Hans im Glück title in its product range that has the potential to become a classic: The fact that over 3.8 million games and expansions have been sold of this medieval themed game speaks for itself...

Drei Magier Spiele
The creators of Drei Magier Spiele are equally ambitious, albeit for a younger target group.
They develop astounding ideas for high-quality children’s games with that special something in the creative surroundings of an old Frankish mill. This game, which carries the masterful signature of the game publisher, is probably the first of its kind to be played in the dark, and has been awarded numerous prizes in several countries. The title "Children’s Game of the Year, 2004" also affirms the Schmidt Spiele approach that surprises its players time and again: new game ideas, new materials, and a new level of fun – that’s what it's all about.

Adlung-Spiele Verlag
In May 2007, Schmidt Spiele made this strong brand trio into a quartet. Almost literally, because Adlung-Spiele Verlag – located in Remseck a. N. – then began collaboration with one of Germany’s leading card game specialists. Adlung has attained this distinguished position with their manifold ideas, which have been nominated for both Game of the Year and Children's Game of the Year. Adlung’s most popular game, Speed, is a true evergreen and a delight to countless card game enthusiasts and those who assure its continued success. Creative and imaginative card games for children, families and adults are the trump cards that Adlung meticulously designs and that Schmidt now lays on the table.
